Sean Dwyer for NEC 2024

I work for HMRC in Cardiff as a compliance caseworker.

I have been active in PCS since joining HMRC in 2017. I am the secretary of the R&C Wales branch as well as a member of the R&C Left Unity Committee.

Before joining the Civil Service, I studied for a MSc in Politics & Public Policy.I have a keen interest in the history of working-class struggle. I believe that the trade union movement is the foremost vehicle through which working-class people can transform their lives and society. Within the Civil Service, I regard social class as the forgotten element of the equality and diversity agenda. I want to see PCS continue to lead the way in addressing the deficit imposed by a class system that is written through the Civil Service like a stick of rock.

We face another year of challenge in 2024. A Tory government, bloodied and wounded at the polls yet still with the ability and inclination to harm our members through attacks on pay, on flexible working and further threats to make reductions to headcount. We have made strides this year and delivered significant victories, particularly in resisting attacks on redundancy terms. However, the landscape is replete with challenge, persistent high inflation will see our members face pay offers equalling real terms pay cuts in the new year and a Tory government will resolve to attack our conditions to its last breath. Any election in 2024 will likely deliver a government led by Keir Starmer. We are in no position to expect favours from central government, there is no alternative to that a united, well led PCS at the forefront, leading in our members’ interest and inspiring a united working class to continue to oppose attacks on ordinary workers. I believe I can play my part in this vital work.

I am a Socialist and a member of Left Unity.
