Saul Cahill for PCS NEC 2026

I joined PCS just after joining the Civil Service in May 2020 and became a rep in September 2022.

I am a personal case rep, fighting for members in workplace and seeing the immediate and real impact we have for our members on a daily basis. Protecting members from unfair treatment, achieving reasonable adjustments which allow them to remain in work and to have equal opportunities to deliver for the public we serve. Enabling our members to do the great work they are capable of is something of which I am immensely proud.

Working in a jobcentre, I’ve experienced first hand the devastating impact of short staffing on our members. The pressures this places on members has led to drastic amounts of workplace stress and has meant members have not been able to offer the support they want to our claimants.

I have recently been re-elected as the Northern Regional Young Members convenor – In that role I’ve worked to re-establish the network, supported other young members to find different ways to get involved in PCS, and arranged events so young members from across departments can meet and find ways to organise together.

As a member of the DWP GEC, I’m proud of the way our Left Unity leadership has stood up for members on pay and fought for a fairer social security system. I’m personally glad to have had the opportunity to work alongisde our Group Young Members’ officer and Young Members Advisory Committee again o build on last year’s successful Group Young Members seminar by improving support for Regional Young Members Officers and ensured the YMAC could feed into our Group’s wider work for a fairer social security system.

First elected to the NEC in 2024, I saw first-hand the damage that the “Alliance for Change” majority caused, unable to develop a strategy for our national campaign and undermining the trust of our members. This year, I’m proud to have been part of a Democracy Alliance-led NEC that has put PCS back to action. We’ve:

  • Righted the wrongs of the last NEC by refunding the levy
  • Embedded an organising strategy which empowers branches and groups to lead campaigns and has seen consistent membership growth
  • Used our members’ knowledge to articulate a political alternative on social security, migration and more
  • Held the Cabinet Office to account on the Civil Service Pensions scandal, we continue to push for them to go further to clear the backlog and offer meaningful compensation
  • Made real progress in negotiations on the national campaign while continuing to build our organising strength so we can respond industrially if needed.

I firmly believe PCS has a vital role in the wider Trade Union movement and society. From safeguarding human rights in the UK and internationally through actions such as the legal challenges against Government immigration policy, to combatting the climate crisis.

PCS has a proud history of being an active, campaigning union it’s crucial this continues, and if re-elected, I look forward to continuing to play an important role in this.

I’m a proud socialist and Left Unity member and I’d encourage all members to support the full Democracy Alliance slate in the NEC elections.
