Sarah Morton for DWP Assistant Secretary 2024

I am asking for your support in the upcoming PCS DWP GEC elections for the position of Group Assistant Secretary.

I joined PCS on the day I started work IN DWP and I have been a PCS Representative for 11 years. I am DWP Liverpool Branch Secretary, NW Regional Committee Vice Chair, and Group Vice President. I am also an ordinary member on the NEC.

As an experienced Rep and Branch Officer, I have organised and led on industrial action campaigns to fight for a fair wage, terms and conditions, and against office closures.

I was elected to the Group Executive Committee in 2019 as an ordinary member and in 2021 I was elected as a Group Assistant Secretary. It has been my absolute honour and privilege to be elected as a Group Assistant Secretary each year since. After covering the role of Group Vice President last year, I was co-opted as Group Vice President in December 2023 when elected VP Fran Heathcote resigned in order to take up her post as the first female General Secretary in PCS history.

The different roles I have held on the GEC along with the support of fellow Left Unity Group officers and members, has allowed me to build on the experience I gained from the work carried out at branch and regional level. I worked closely with Group Safety Officer Carol Revell throughout the pandemic, fighting to keep our members safe and able to deliver vital services during incredibly difficult times. Working with Advisory Committees across TU Operations has also helped me broaden my knowledge of the major issues impacting all our members.

I am a Socialist and proud to be part of the Left Unity led GEC that worked with members to return a historic ballot result and a strategy that won concessions for our members when they were desperately needed. I am fully committed to Left Unity and their policies.

If re-elected as Group Assistant Secretary I will continue to be a strong voice for our members on the GEC and I will work with Left Unity comrades to prioritise:

  • To support our campaign for increased staffing across DWP and access to hybrid working for ALL our members
  • To continue to oppose office closures and work with our reps and members to fight against job losses and removal of the vital services we provide in working class communities.
  • To prioritise the National Campaign on Pay, Pensions, CSCS and job security.
  • To oppose outsourcing of work and fight to bring all outsourced work back in house.

I am asking for your vote in this election and, in order to give us the strongest possible GEC, please vote for the Left Unity Candidates to ensure that we continue to have a strong, organised Group leadership capable of fighting and winning!
