Nasrin Ahmed for DWP GEC 2024

Dear Fellow Union Members,

I am honoured to stand before you as a candidate for the position of Group Executive Committee (GEC) member within our esteemed PCS Union. With over three decades of dedicated membership and a fervent commitment to the principles of justice and equality, I am deeply invested in the continued advancement of our union and the welfare of its members.

Throughout my extensive tenure within the PCS Union, I have served in various capacities, each experience shaping my understanding and dedication to our collective cause. As a Union Representative for the past decade, I have stood alongside fellow members, advocating for their rights and tirelessly fighting against injustice and discrimination. My role as Branch Treasurer for six years has honed my financial acumen, ensuring the responsible management of our union’s resources.

Moreover, I have actively participated in national and international campaigns, advocating for equality, diversity, and solidarity. My attendance at conferences and events focused on equality, race, disability, and law discrimination reflects my commitment to fostering an inclusive and just society. I firmly believe that diversity is our strength, and as a working mother, part-time worker, and member of an ethnic minority and of Muslim faith, I am committed to amplifying the voices of the underrepresented within our union.

My journey towards union activism was deeply personal, rooted in my own experiences with discrimination and injustice. From childhood encounters with racism to witnessing first-hand the rise of far-right extremism, I understand the urgency of our current challenges. The Windrush scandal, Islamophobia, Anti-Semitism, Brexit, and the ongoing crisis in Palestine underscore the importance of our union’s role in challenging systemic oppression and discrimination.

One of my proudest moments was initiating training sessions in response to racist remarks within our workplace. By partnering with the Anne Frank Trust, we delivered powerful messages that challenged biases and prejudices, fostering a more inclusive and respectful environment for all. This experience reaffirmed my belief in the transformative power of education and dialogue in combating bigotry and hate.

As a member of the GEC, I am committed to advocating for progressive policies, amplifying the voices of marginalized communities, and mobilizing our union to confront the pressing issues of our time. Together, we can build a stronger, more equitable future for all members of the PCS Union.

Thank you for considering my candidacy. I am excited about the opportunity to serve and represent you on the Group Executive Committee.

Please support all the Left Unity candidates for the GEC.

In solidarity,

Nasrin
