Mark Byers for DWP Organiser 2026

Standing Proudly for Re‑Election as DWP Group Organiser

I am standing for re‑election as your DWP Group Organiser for 2025–26. I have served in this role since November 2023 and was first elected by members in May 2024. Before that, I was a GEC member and GECLO for Eastern England, East Midlands, and DWP Scotland. I also currently serve as Regional Chair for PCS DWP North East and as a rep in the DWP Tyneside & Northumbria Branch. I am a workplace rep, a socialist, and a committed member of Left Unity.

A Year of Challenge — And a Year of Fightback

While others hesitated, DWP Group under Left Unity leadership got organised, mobilised, and delivered.

Despite national setbacks, DWP Group grew membership when other groups experienced decline. As Group Organiser, I have prioritised strong workplace organisation by:

– Transforming reps’ training: expanding courses, updating materials for the post‑Covid and current‑DWP environment, and widening our pool of tutors.

– Training more reps and delivering more courses.

– Introducing regional organising events to share best practice and give reps practical tools to organise confidently in their workplaces.

This work has already strengthened our branches and is laying the foundation for the next phase of our national campaign.

A Union that can deliver — Left Unity proved it.

In September 2025, our consultative ballot delivered the highest turnout in recent years, showing clearly that members will mobilise when the campaign is credible, energetic, and rooted in the workplace.

Then, in January–February 2026, we ran the best‑organised statutory strike ballot in PCS DWP’s recent history. Although we narrowly missed the Tory anti‑union threshold, the campaign proved:

– our structures are stronger,

– our members are engaged,

– and with continued organising, we will cross that threshold next time.

This was not a setback — it was a turning point, and it was driven by Left Unity strategy, discipline, and leadership.

What I stand for — and what I will deliver with your support

Working with branches, regions, and the LU-led GEC since 2021, I have helped ensure DWP Group continues to:

– Fight for fair pay, pensions, and staffing levels.

– Listen to members and act decisively in their interests.

– Oppose agency staffing and push for directly employed DWP contracts for all workers.

– Bring services back in-house with proper union representation and protection.

– Grow PCS membership and participation across the whole department.

Left Unity is leading the fight for fairness — in our workplaces and across society. We are the faction that organises, delivers, and wins.

Why re-elect me?

If re-elected, I will continue to:

– Strengthen organisation in every branch,

– Build momentum toward the next statutory ballot,

– Expand rep development and workplace organising,

– Ensure DWP Group is ready to win industrial action when members decide to take it.

Left Unity has a plan, it has energy, and it has the proven track record to take PCS forward.
