Mark Byers for DWP Organiser 2024

I am seeking election as DWP Group Organiser. I have held this role since November 2023. Previously I was a GEC member and GECLO for Eastern England region. I am also regional chair for the PCS DWP North East, rep and organiser for DWP Tyneside & Northumbria branch. I have also held positions on the DWP O&E committee. I have been a workplace rep and LU member since 2012.

Undoubtably 2024 will pose significant challenges to PCS in the face of an increasingly hostile government. The need for recruitment, retention and participation of members will be crucial to obtain the wins that our members deserve. Good, consistent organising practises embedded in branches and regions are needed to achieve our aims. I believe as Group Organiser working with our LU leadership I can continue to work with all branches and regions to put the DWP group in the best position possible for our ongoing campaign. In DWP group, as a GEC member from 2021, I have worked with the LU leadership to ensure that we continue to: –

● Continue our campaign for pay, pensions and staffing.

● Listen to our members and act in their best interests.

● Oppose the involvement of recruitment agencies supplying staff to DWP.

● Move current agency staff onto DWP contracts.

● Increase membership and participation

There is a continuing insidious and dogmatic push towards the privatisation of public services despite the evidence that this simply does not work. If elected I will fight to: –

● End the outsourcing of valuable public services.

● Campaign to bring back services within the department and ensure these workers have genuine representation in the workplace.

I believe the Left Unity agenda is leading the fight to restore fairness for our members and society as a whole. I believe that our union led by left unity should continue to work inclusively and democratically to make sure members’ voices are heard.
