Marianne Owens for PCS Vice President 2026

I’m based in Cardiff and I’ve been active in PCS since joining in 2002.

I have held a range of positions in the last two decades. Currently I am VC of my own branch  and Vice President of the NEC.

I’m honoured to have been elected to serve our members as Vice President last year and I’ve enjoyed getting stuck into the role, chairing the Climate Change & Environment Committee and being involved in Equalities & International work.

I was really pleased to be involved in the re launch of PCS’ Tax Justice Campaign that forms  an integral part of the alternative economic vision  put forward by our union.

We saw a change of Government after 14 years of Tory rule, but for PCS members very little has changed since 2024. Our pay is still low, our members are still forced to use food banks and try to survive on benefits that top up their pay. Children in schools are often too hungry to learn, our NHS is still creaking with patients waiting for so long for treatment that many will die before they reach the front of the queue. This is only going to get worse as the economy spirals because of the illegal war on Iran by the US & Israel.

Instead of addressing these issues we have an administration that would rather double what we spend on increased military budgets whilst cutting  funding for diplomatic services than address the poverty that many of it’s own employees are living through.

And whilst the bombs in the middle east and elsewhere continue to drop, politicians of almost  every  flavour, rush to blame refugees for all of the ills that we suffer, stoking disgraceful racism, bigotry and division that makes us all less safe.

In this volatile political backdrop it is clear that our union needs a strong left unity leadership who can respond both industrially and politically and I’d be honoured to be elected to the slate to serve and lead our members in the coming struggles.

I’ve been involved in anti racism campaigns, anti war and environmental politics since I was a teenager and I strongly believe that the unions role is fighting not just for our own working  conditions but also to make the world a better place for everyone.

As a socialist I stand against bigotry and hatred of any kind, just as racist has no place in our union, neither does sexism, homophobia, transphobia, ableism or any other form of hate.

This is especially important when we can see the rise of far right politics in our communities, our role must be to build hope and unity.
