I’m based in HMRC in Cardiff. I have been active in PCS since joining in 2002.
In that time, I have held a range of positions. Currently I am VC of my own branch and HMRC Assistant Group Secretary, NEC member and member of the LUNC as well as having recently been elected as the first Chair of the new Wales Executive Committee.
I was first elected to the GEC in 2007 as an ordinary GEC member and have been an Assistant Group Secretary since 2017. I have been involved in the negotiating various agreements that provided protections and improvements for members in that time including Management Information Systems (MIS) Pacesetter and Pay & Contract Reform. I’ve also been involved in a number of successful campaigning areas, I was part of the team that saw an end to the divisive PMR performance management system, the end of sickness absence trigger points and the brilliant and successful campaign to not only keep the Porthmadog Welsh Language Unit open but also expand the service, retaining and creating important jobs in a rural area of Wales.

During my 20 plus years as a rep at various levels I have gained a wealth of experience in campaigning, negotiating and representing members at all levels of PCS. I believe that the most important role of a rep is in listening to and giving a voice to our members, all reps need to be accountable to the members that elect them and therefore I believe that consultation and reporting back to members is always key and something I will continue to do if I am re elected to the GEC, be that regular written briefings, live update events such as members meetings or submissions to the annual report.
The last year has shown just what we can achieve for our members when we are organised and fight back. We have made gains in the national campaign but we still have huge battles in front of us. The fight for fair pay is far from over and it is clear that we will have to be ready to re-ballot to continue to make gains for our members. The Government are weak but vicious and are increasingly looking to blame our hard working members for their mistakes along with their ramping up racism and attacking the most vulnerable people in our society. We cannot let them divide us and we must continue to stand up for justice through campaigning and action. I am enormously proud of the work that our union has done in the areas of social justice, be it standing against the introduction of even more draconian anti trade union laws, campaigning for a ceasefire in Palestine or preventing the government’s plans to deport refugees to Rwanda, we are a union who consistently punches above our weight because of our strong socialist leadership.
We must continue to fight for an end to this tory government and it’s policies that attack ordinary workers. In order to do this we need a strong LU leadership in PCS who are prepared to work with others both in PCS and across our movement to organise, campaign and mobilise where necessary.
The task of uniting across our movement and fighting back has never been more urgent and we must as PCS be at the forefront of the fightback.
I am a member of Left Unity & I am a socialist.
