Karen Alderson for NEC 2026

I am standing for re‑election to the PCS National Executive Committee as a long‑standing Left Unity activist with over seventeen years of representative experience and a proven record of delivering for members. Since joining HM Passport Office in 2006, I have held a wide range of PCS roles, becoming active from 2009 and joining Left Unity in 2010. I currently serve as Home Office Group President, NEC ordinary member, Northern Region Chair, and HMPO Northern Branch Secretary.

Across all these responsibilities, my focus has remained consistent: strengthening our union, protecting members, and ensuring PCS remains an effective and credible voice for civil service staff.

Over the past year, I have played a key role in restoring stability and effective decision‑making at the top of our union following a difficult period. This has allowed us to refocus on members’ priorities, improving pay, job security, and workplace conditions. Alongside this, we have made real progress: growing our membership, improving PCS’s financial position, and embedding our organising strategy so branches have the tools and support they need to build workplace strength.

Within the Home Office Group, I am extremely proud to have led our organising work, delivering year on year membership growth. I have visited branches across the country to support recruitment, develop new reps, and help build stronger, more confident branches.

As pay lead for the Home Office Group, I have been heavily involved in the ongoing three‑year pay flex case, pushing for fair and sustainable improvements to members’ pay. I have also supported members through disputes, including in maritime, ensuring they had the representation, strategy, and solidarity needed to stand up to the employer. Alongside this, I have chaired multiple members’ meetings nationally and led various consultation exercises, ensuring all members’ voices are heard.

I have served on the National Organising Committee, National Campaigns Committee, Finance Committee, and the Editorial board, as well as chairing the Northern Regional Committee, a large and diverse region that has been central to major national campaigns, including supporting the Benton Park View sacked reps. I am also a proud member of my local trade’s council.

We have engaged constructively with government on elements of the Employment Rights Act that may benefit members and representatives, with further work underway. I remain committed to rebuilding PCS’s Fighting Fund on an affordable, sustainable basis so the union is prepared for future challenges. Alongside this, I have helped develop campaigns and alliances defending civil service jobs, equality, and workplace protections at a time when all three are under growing threat.

This last year has shown how essential it is that we elect the right people to the NEC. Key processes have been obstructed by the majority factions, and ultimately members have lost out. Democracy Alliance must retain the majority to ensure members’ interests come first.

I am standing for the NEC because I believe members deserve serious, steady, and effective leadership. My commitment is simple: to put members first in every decision I take, and to continue working for real improvements in pay, conditions, flexible working, and job security through practical negotiation, clear communication, and accountable leadership.

With your support, I will continue to be a strong, visible, and principled representative for all members at every level of our movement, building unity, building strength, and building the PCS our members deserve.

I, together with the other Left Unity candidates, would be honoured to have your support.
