Jocelyn McFarlane for DWP Assistant Secretary 2025

I am asking for your support in my re-election onto the Group Executive Committee as Group Assistant Secretary. I’m a socialist and a member of Left Unity.  Since being elected to the GEC in 2024, I have been actively supporting members within Health & Safety, Retirement Services and Customer Excellence directorates. This past year has been a very challenging one, particularly in the H&S space.  I have been part of the numerous negotiations working to ensure all staff can feel confident working in the safest possible environments.  This has not been without its difficulties and disagreements with the employer, which as part of the H&S team, we have made robust and continuous challenges to decisions made. As part of the group H&S team I work to improve and develop communications, with the members best interests at the heart of our outcomes.

As part of the various directorate operations teams, I actively engage both formally and informally in change and areas of concerns raised by the membership.  I will not shy away from challenging negotiations and pressing for corrective action and change where needed.

PCS members continue to face real hardships, and I will continue to listen to what they want and act in their best interests.  I will continue, if re-elected, to work with our strong Left Unity leadership in a strong member focused democracy.

Locally, I have been the North East of England’s H&S Officer for 12 years representing DWP staff in all H&S matters. I will continue to press for improvements in adherence to matters of H&S. As Branch Chair of a strong proactive branch, I will continue working in the best interest of our members, meeting with the employer and relentlessly pressing for effective consultation on matters that effect members directly.

I have and will continue to support the GEC in the many challenges faced regarding staff health, welfare, and safety, and will fight for continued improvements using all the means at our disposal. I will ensure we stay in touch with our membership and encouraging engagement in PCS campaigns.

If re-elected I will continue to act in the best interests of our members and all DWP staff under Health, Safety and Wellbeing and be active as part of a strong union team giving my full support to our LU members and General Secretary Fran Heathcote, National President Martin Cavanagh and DWP Group President Angela Grant.
