Ian Pope for DWP Vice President 2026

I am seeking re-election to the post of PCS DWP Group Vice President. I have been a member of PCS and its predecessor union, CPSA, since 1984 when I joined the civil service in the DHSS. I am employed by the Department for Work and Pensions at Atlantic Quay, Glasgow. Over the past 42 years I have held positions at every level of the union – Acting National Vice President, National Executive Committee (NEC), Group Vice President, Group Assistant Secretary, Group Executive Committee (GEC), Scotland Committee Chairperson, DWP Scotland Regional Chairperson, Branch Secretary, Branch Treasurer, Site Representative and Departmental Trade Union Side Chair. If re-elected to the position of Group Vice President, I will bring a wealth of knowledge and experience of representing members in negotiations with the employer and defending members at a local and national level.

I was first elected to the GEC in 2009, and I am currently DWP Group Vice President with responsibility for Universal Credit, Working Age/Move to UC, Jobs and Careers Service, Strategic Resourcing, Social Security Policy, Devolved Social Security, as well as being a member of the Pay Team and the Campaigns Committee.

If re-elected, I will bring a wealth of knowledge and experience of representing members in negotiations with the employer and defending members at a local and national level. This is going to be important as the DWP are embarking on the biggest changes to Social Security in decades, which will see enormous changes to the way the department operates.

If re-elected, the priorities of Left Unity are as follows:

  • Demanding a fairer distribution of pay and protecting our lowest paid members with an end to the DWP being a minimum wage employer
  • Campaign for a fairer Social Security system that treats benefit claimants with dignity, respect and compassion
  • Push back against any cuts in staffing, estate and the services we provide to the public
  • Adequate staffing levels
  • Fight to make workplaces safer
  • Campaign for hybrid working for every member of staff in DWP
  • Fight any privatisation and continue to hold the government to account on their manifesto commitment to have the largest insourcing in a generation
  • Build the strength of the union in all workplaces
  • Promote equality and oppose all forms of discrimination

It is crucial that all the Left Unity candidates, under the leadership of the current Group President, Angela Grant, are elected to ensure a strong, determined and experienced leadership moving forward. We will always listen to our members and put your interests first.
