Cheral Govind for NEC 2024

I have worked at Ofgem from a temp AO to my position now for 6 years, a PCS member, then rep for half of those. Although fewer years than some of my fellow comrades I remain a committed socialist and I want everything to be better for everyone. We only know too well the effects of this government’s inaction on austerity. I am standing for the NEC this year to be part of a committee that makes a difference to our members and wider society – from ensuring we have fair pay for pay work, to supporting our refugee and asylum seekers against draconian tory policy.

In my own workplace I am proud to have been part of a committee that won significant U turns from our employer, namely pausing, then abandoning the decision to double our mandatory office attendance days. By creating surveys and completing extensive data analysis I provided key statistics that accurately reflected the considerably negative effects of this policy change on our already underpaid and overworked workforce. I want every branch to be empowered to challenge any erosion of any working conditions.

I am also currently privileged to sit on the Scottish Trade Union Congress’ Black Workers Committee as vice-chair, and hope to make an impact to reduce racial inequalities and broaden what a trade unionist can look like – sari-cladded women in the 70s inspired wonderful solidarity I hope we keep with us life long.

I’ve stood proudly week on week with against fascism in Erskine where asylum seekers and refugees were housed and my moral compass is such that I would always stand against oppression, in or out of work.

I want the best for our members and the outgoing NEC strategy has been pivotal to our success this far (albeit falling short in some areas, I would expect no less from this government) I hope to continue to keep pushing, organising and building our power if elected to the NEC.
