I am asking for your support to re-elect me on to the DWP GEC.  I am proud to be a socialist and a left unity member.

I think it’s important that we have a strong leadership in DWP and I think that electing the Left Unity candidates you will have a strong leadership.

I joined the civil service in March 1999 and I became a trade union rep within a couple of weeks of joining as there was no rep in my office.  Since then I have done many varied roles including currently the DWP Group Safety Officer.    Many of you will know me by my office pseudonym as Carol Smith as I have dealt with many of your safety issues from my work email.

As the Group safety Officer I have had to deal with many challenges over the years, including the chaos of how the government instructed the department on how to deal with the covid crisis and the post covid haste to change all the risk assessments.  I have work with safety reps across the UK to ensure that we were all working together for the best interest of our members.

This year we have had to deal with and learn about RAAC. The way that that RAAC is being managed demonstrates that the safety of the working class is being disregarded and embedded in secrecy when reps are being told this is being managed from number 10.  The government guidance states TU consultation should happen and on sites affected everyone that uses that site should know the risk.  We have to expose them on this. The Covid enquiry is also exposing many failures and disregards for workers safety

Within our workplaces we have to fight against unreasonable pressures put on our reps as they try combat the edicts from government.

I support the national campaign strategy and the tactics that have been used.  It was right to pause and to revaluate where we are in order to look at the next phase of the campaign.  We have to be mindful of the latest tory attack with minimum service levels but I am convinced if we all stick together we will win.

Left Unity and PCS must continue to lead the way against this.

It’s also important that Left Unity lead the green agenda and are at the forefront for a Just transition towards net zero.  Especially as the Government are already backtracking on their promises.
